Goddess project

I want to do a series of paintings featuring goddess from around the world. I want to depict them as accurate to their culture as possible. I have two versions, prehistoric and non.

The one on the left is acrylic, she’s a figurine from the Vinca culture which was located in Eastern Europe. The one on the right is Persephone, based on a red figure vase. The flowers are asphodel, She’s done in watercolor and colored pencil.

I plan on selling the images I make and I’ll take requests as well.

I sell my work at Burning Blossom Crafts

Day 4 Family Tree

Golden_Apple_of_Discord_by_Jacob_Jordaens

Dionysus’ family tree his huge thanks to Zeus.  Because of this I’ll start with his human mother.

Semele was the daughter of, Cadmus, founder of Thebes.  Her mother  was Harmonia, goddess of Harmony. To the Estuscian , Semia.  To the Romans she is  Stimula.

Cadmus, Semele’s father was Boeotian, a city-state in Central Greece. He was considered the greatest monster slayer.  His sister was Europa.  Agenor and Telapassa Are the parents of Cadmus. They are descended from Poseidon and Libya, princess of Egypt.  Libya was the daughter of Pharaoh Epaphus or Apis and queen Memphis. Epaphus was son of Io and Zeus.  Memphis was the daughter of Nilus, who was the personification of the Nile and makes her a river nymph.  Talapassa  may have also been a daughter of the Nile and a cloud nymph, Nephele. Nephele was created by Zeus.

Harmonia is the daughter of Ares and Aphrodite.  Ares is the son of Hera and Zeus, making him Dionysus half brother.  Zeus and Hera are the children of Chronos and Rhea who descend from Gaia and Uranus.  Dionysus has countless siblings.

Day 2 and 3

This is a double entry because I have no idea how Dionysus got my attention. That’s what the topic of day 2 is supposed to be.

Ariadne and Dionysus(1)

Day 3 is may favorite story About Dionysus.  That would be Dionysus and Ariadne. Ariadne was a Minoan princess, daughter of King Minos and sister of the Minotaur.  She apparently fell in love with the Athenian, Theseus. She helped him kill her brother after he promised to take her to Athens. He took her as fer as Naxos before abandoning her while she was sleeping.

Dionysus found Ariadne and eventually they were married and had children. They were named Oenopion, Staphylus, Thoas,  Peparethus, Phanus, Eurymedon, Enyeus, Ceramus, Maron, Euanthes, Latramys and Tauropolis.  Sometime later Ariadne was either murdered by Perseus, A hAlf brother of Dionysus, or she hung herself .  Some time after that Dionysus went to Hades and got her back.

Day 17 of 30 days of Set

Set relates to different pantheons in a couple different ways.  One way is the people who honor that pantheon believe Set to be a version of a specific god. Another way is that they marry him to some of their goddesses.

The Greeks who called him Seth, saw Set as Typhon, the younest titan and deadliest being in their mythology. As Typhon, Set was paired with Echidna. This would have made him the father of Cerberus, Orthrus(2 headed dog) and Leanean Hydra. Later the Caucasian Eagle, Chimera, Ladon(a dragon) and more.

anat_anathThe Hittites associated him with Teshub, their storm god. This would have paired him with Arinniti, their sun goddess. This made him father a mountain god named Sarruma and Inara, goddess of wild animals and the steppes.

In some accounts, Nephthys is not Sets only wife.  The goddesses Anat and Astarte where added to his family. Anat is a Semitic goddess of war.  This is probably due to his identification with the storm god Hadad. She stands by Set/Hadad against Horus and is considered the daughter of Re in this tradition. Astarte is actually Ishtar, a Semitic goddess of sex, fertility, and war. As Sets wife she also aided him against Horus and she’s Re’s daughter..
